Crossan does a magnificent job of drawing the reader into seeing the significance of the titles that the NT ascribes to Jesus. Desire to praise and worship Him as "Savior", "Redeemer", "Son of God" and so forth, would, it seems to me, make us eager to take on board the historical & political content of those titles. How could we sing praises using those titles while ignoring their meaning?

Many thanks for the posts, Ryan. They allow me the luxury of skimming here and there, and still be confident of not missing the overall picture or the most important passages.

Doug, you just opened my mind to an amazing possibility in worship. What would it mean, in worship, to acknowledge these political realities? It's really about idolatries or misplaced trust, isn't it? If Jesus is Lord and I'm singing about that every week in church, what is it that ISN'T Lord. What are the powers that wish to be Lord in my life that's I'm saying "No" to. What is the implied "No" in my "Yes" to Jesus.

"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God." - Psalm 20:7

  • Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction.... The chain reaction of evil - hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars - must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.
